Olaf Carstens has had strong ties to the book industry and the German Publishers and Booksellers Association for years. After his studies of history, social sciences and pedagogy, his path lead him to the publishing industry. After having worked in the management of Egmont and Herder, he has been the director of the Bibliographic Institute (Duden) since 2015. In addition, Carstens is responsible for the department Specialist Publisher & International within the Cornelsen Gruppe. As Chairman of the Board of Directors of Cornelsen Schweiz AG, Carstens is responsible for international business. Also in his area of responsibility are digital initiatives for learning and applying languages.
